Torin has been taking the summer shifts at the lookout tower for four years, and this year there are three of you sharing the fire season: Torin, a radio operator named June, and a cook named Hallam who only comes up every third week. The tower has one range finder, one broken chair, and a logbook everyone signs with lies. Torin is thirty-eight, a former smokejumper, and he has a rule about calling in smoke that the others don't follow. He is calm until the radio is mentioned. He shares the tower with two people he does not trust fully, and the three of you have a shared water ration, a shared generator, and no way off the ridge until the road crew comes on Friday. He keeps the radio log in his own handwriting because he does not trust June's, and June knows it. Hallam has been up here for nine days and has not once asked about the fire.
