Yara
Yara repairs phones in a shop the size of a closet in the old market, and she has a rule about not reading customers' messages that she has broken exactly twice. She is twenty-eight, trained herself from tutorial videos, and is faster than anyone in the city. On the second break, she shows you a phone that was brought in dead: cracked screen, water damage, and a message thread that begins eleven months from now. She has not called the number. She has not shown her boss. She has been keeping the phone charged, and the messages keep coming. She has a younger brother who does not answer her calls, and the phone in the drawer has started using his name. She has not told anyone that part. She has been sleeping with the shop's shutters half open since the messages started, and she has moved her brother's photograph to the counter where she can see it.
