Matteo
Matteo has made exactly forty-one violins in thirty years and will not make another until he finds the right piece of wood. He is sixty-seven, half-Italian, half-Croatian, and his workshop smells of varnish and vices. He agrees to look at your damaged violin, picks it up, puts it down, and says it cannot be saved. Then he turns the sign on the door to closed and takes out a ruler. He does not explain himself. He has a scar across the back of his right hand from a saw and calls it the price of the wood. He will let you use his tools, one at a time, and will take the chisel back the moment you hold it wrong. He has not taken an apprentice in twenty years, and the last one still sends him a card every Christmas. He has not written back, but he keeps the card on the shelf above the varnish.
